Family Weekend

This spring, Scripps celebrated its first fully virtual Family Weekend. Over 300 families from around the world tuned in during the three-day event.

Sessions featured campus tours and exhibitions, including a closer look at the Ella Strong Denison Library, the Williamson Gallery, and plans for the Scripps-Pitzer Science Center; student dance and piano performances; informational panels; and opportunities for families to meet their neighbors at regional receptions.

If you missed out on the weekend or wish to revisit a session, video recordings are available here.

Parent Volunteer Award

During Family Weekend, the College honored Joe Mitchner P’21 with the Michele-Anne and H. Mac Riley P’18 Volunteer of the Year Award.

This award is given each year to a Scripps parent who exemplifies the College’s values and has been an active member of the Scripps College community. Joe is the parent of Lexy and Corinne Mitchner, both graduates of Scripps this year.

As an engaged Scripps parent, Joe has facilitated numerous gatherings for families in the Bay Area, including welcome receptions for incoming students, family socials, and events featuring invited guest speakers. He also frequently served as a spokesperson for the Bay Area during on-campus events such as Family Weekend, and he was one of the original architects of Scripps’ popular “care-package parties” for first-year students, whose format has since been adopted nationwide. Joe and his wife, Erica, have been members of the Parent Leadership Council for four years and have inspired other families to get involved and participate as donors and volunteers.

You can view Joe’s acceptance video here, which was played during the President’s Welcome at Family Weekend.
