Alumnae Engagement News

Message from Juanita Nash-Dahlen ’72

In these ever-changing times, I find myself nostalgically longing for in-person connections and community—and for a stroll on our Scripps campus to pick roses, take a dip in the pool, or drink a Motley latte in Seal Court. While students will not be returning to campus this fall, we continue to hope for their return in the spring—and for the return of those chances to reconnect with our classmates and friends in person at Scripps and around the globe. In the midst of our increased isolation, I have found solace and even joy in the significant expansion of virtual opportunities for alums to connect with each other and with the College, unbound by geography. Whether it was through the new Career Conversations series this past spring to support alums in these times of uncertainty or this summer’s Virtual Camp Scripps series, alums have been finding ways to take advantage of this surge in robust digital and virtual engagement. In this spirit, it is with great excitement that I introduce Olive Grove, the College’s newest resource, born out of an ever-increasing desire to find meaningful ways to stay connected. I look forward to “seeing” you all virtually very soon.

Career Conversations Recap

This spring, the Office of Alumnae Engagement partnered with Career Planning & Resources to launch a new program that supports alums in their career journeys. These free virtual sessions provide opportunities for the alumnae community to explore various topics related to job support, stress management, career planning, and résumé review.

Career Conversations returns this fall with a second virtual series: “Skills and Strategies for a New Virtual Norm.” These sessions will focus on key tactical skills and strategies for alums as they navigate the job market and their professional development in times of uncertainty, from optimizing one’s LinkedIn profile and utilizing online networking tools to personal branding and interviewing.

Virtual Camp Scripps Recap

The COVID-19 crisis meant that Camp Scripps could not take place on campus this June for the first time since it began over 26 years ago. But in true Camp fashion, dedicated Creative Caucus members and longtime Campers came together to plan seven consecutive Saturdays of virtual Camp Scripps programming over the summer. Together, alums from across the decades participated in themed afternoon teas and workshops on topics including, yoga, collage-making, burlesque history, the rise of pandemic gardens, and political engagement in 2020.
