Rachael Warecki ’08
Los Feliz, California
Career: Social media coordinator, Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport
Majors: English and Hispanic studies
Even the sky may not be the limit for Rachael Warecki.
The English and Hispanic studies dual major at Scripps tries to do it all—with trademark fearlessness and frequent success.
After a two-year stint as a Teach For America corps member in a Los Angeles charter school, Warecki now oversees Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport social media channels—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and whatever new mode comes along. She also helps run events, writes press releases, and works on a multitude of projects. To top it off, she manages the staff softball team.
What she loves most about her job is taking photographs for the social media sites – especially when she can hitch a ride in the police helicopter to take aerial photos. Then, her Scripps background pays off.
“As cliché as this sounds, my colleagues have repeatedly remarked on my ability to present myself professionally and fearlessly—you know, with confidence, courage, and hope,” she says.
Warecki continues to write creatively, a skill she polished at Scripps. She received the Crombie Allan Award for the best work of undergraduate creative fiction and the prize for the best senior thesis from the English Department. She was also editor-in-chief of voice, the student newspaper.
This June, she finished her MFA in creative writing from Antioch University. In the last year, she has had four short stories published.
What’s next for Warecki? “I’d like to keep adding to my pub credits. I’m also working on a novel,” she says.
Don’t be surprised if the book includes plenty of high-flying action.
